Hi! I’m Shurie. I’m a hairstylist in Los Angeles, CA at the well known Butterfly Loft Salon. I was never one of the people that knew they wanted to do hair from a young age. In fact, as a teenager, I was repulsed by the thought of it. I always knew I wanted to do something creative, growing up painting, moving on to working as a photographer for nearly 10 years, and then ultimately going to cosmetology school and getting licensed. It’s funny how things change. When I was in school, I worked at a local salon as a receptionist to get used to the culture and speed of working in a salon. I wanted to live and breath it and since I wasn’t licensed yet, being a receptionist would have to do. I took my test and the very next day I started in a salon working as an assistant. I assisted for a year, working two or three other jobs at the same time to pay the bills. I would wake up at 3AM every morning, leave my house at 3:30, work in a coffee shop until 9 or 10, then head to my job assisting where I would work until 7 or 8 or 9 at night. On the days I wasn’t working in the coffee shop, I was working at Anthropologie, shipping orders and doing general grunt work until 10 or so and then right back to the salon. On Sundays, I would shoot weddings or portraits. Wash, rinse, repeat for one year.
When a stylist left my salon, the owner put it out that she was looking to fill that chair. It scared the hell out of me, but I approached her and asked if I could work it as a commission stylist while I built my clientele. I remember so clearly, her asking me, “Do you think you’re ready?” And I said, “I don’t know, but I’ll try.” And that was that. I worked for a year on commission, never going a single week without a paying client (which was a pretty big deal in my little salon in Simi Valley, CA) before deciding to rent my chair from then on. After about another year, I hired my first assistant and a couple months after that, I applied to be an educator at Pravana, where I was an Artist Educator.
Since then, I have been lucky enough to meet and work with so many inspiring and talented artists, teach classes, work hair shows, and experience tons of the industry while I find my way. I am now an educator for Pulp Riot and reside at Butterfly Loft salon where I work with my two awesome assistants to make all of my amazing clients feel like bad bitches on the inside and out. I’m passionate about the art I create, both inside and outside the salon, and I work to make every appointment feel like a sleep over or a girls night.
What does the future hold for me? I don’t know, but as long as I leave a trail of confident and empowered women in my wake, I’ll be happy.
